A modern infill in Westboro with emphasis on reflecting the context of the street while providing reasonably sized homes for families.
Elm Street is a unique approach to infilll in an established neighbourhood. Parking is hidden towards the middle of the building, leaving it unseen by the neighbours and from the street. This project receiver the Ottawa Urban Design award for 2011 and the RAIC Urban Design Award of Merit in 2012.
The design solution had to perform as a hard-working fully functioning kitchen and as a backdrop for concert performances and entertaining events held by the home owners. To achieve this task, maximum flexibility was needed, the appliances needed to be accessible but not overwhelming, and the design needed to subtle and classic yet rich and contemporary.
Contemporary light-filled family home in Old Ottawa South maximizes the lot while maintaining large open green spaces. Building energy requirements are kept low with the help of solar panels, a high performance building envelope and and ultra efficient wood burning stove. Though the layouts are open, there are reading nooks, a sunken homework and library room and a music centre oriented around the main fireplace and gathering space.
Here is an example of some of the projects we are currently working on.
